This list started as a compilation of clean books that my children or I have personally read. Since the demand for more clean books has been requested by many of you, we are updating the list with some of your suggestions and with books that we have found to be considered clean through research we have done. If a book on the list has personally been read by my family is will see this *** after the book title.
What is a “clean” book? I know everybody’s opinion may vary, but here is generally how we define a “clean” book. These books are not filled with swear words or sexual situations. None of these books have a mature 17+ rating. I generally err on the side of caution when it comes to “clean” books, but again, perspectives vary. While I made this list for teens, many of these books are entertaining for adults too. In addition to enjoying the stories, reading some of the same books that my teens have read has often provided opportunities for conversations that help build on the parent/teen relationship, which is always an added bonus.
Brandon Sanderson is one of my boys’ favorite author The books in this series are huge too, so it will keep your teens (or you) reading for awhile. You honestly can not go wrong with any of Brandon Sanderson’s books and you will find many of his books on our list.

Don’t forget to leave suggestions for books we can add to this list. Happy reading!

You should try out the books of Jennifer Lynn Barnes and Colleen Houck.
Heather says
This list is the best out there! Please keep suggestions coming, especially for clean teen romance!
Alyssa says
The Arrow of the Mist series is clean. Also, the Crown & Court series is very good and clean.
Diane says
Great resource. I have a fifth grader who has such a high reading level that she’s been given access to the High School library. Trying to find “appropriate” books is a real challenge. Hopefully with some of these I’ll be able to point her in the right direction.
Kathy says
Guitar Notes by Mary Amato is a favorite of mine. Also anything by Melanie DIckerson is amazing! The Healer’s Apprentice is the first book in the Hagenheim series and they are just so good! Hope you find these to be enjoyable as much as I have. 🙂

Hey! I was just going to say that another really good clean trilogy that I have read recently is the ascendence trilogy by Jennifer A. Nelson. The first book is called The False Prince. If you love books with good plot twists you will love this trilogy.

Sam says
I definitely suggest books by Jennifer Estep. She’s an amazing writer and every book I’ve read from her is clean. A lot of her series like my favorite, the black blade series, is full of adventure, magic, and action with an awesome female lead!
Christy says
Thanks so much for the suggestions. We’ll check them out.
KT says
All books by Wendy Mass are awesome! I have read all of them and thoroughly enjoy them.

Have you read The Riddle of Arandella? A fantasy adventure with young adult/middle grade characters — no swearing and no sex. It’s available on Amazon.
Mom of Two says
Yes! Finally a website that can help me find good “clean” books for my 12 year old daughter. Thank you!!
Vicki says
Check out the Wildflower Series by Alecia Whitaker. It is a three book series picked up by Scholastic. You might also want to try Queen of Kentucky by the same author.
Lauren says
Great list! With advanced readers we need to be careful. Just because they can read it doesn’t mean they should.
Mary Rice says
I am thrilled to find this site! I am an author of clean YA books and would love to appear on your list. I am also the mother of two girls who were advanced readers. A wonderful woman at the local Borders (sadly, gone now) helped me find books that were appropriate, but they were few and far between. I was inspired to write my Switch series because of them, and because there are other parents who believe that a compelling story doesn’t need graphic sex, violence or language. Currently, the first two books in the series are available – Switch and Forsaken. The third book in the trilogy will release in June of this year. I have another book, not in the series, releasing in the fall.
Thank you! I hope you’ll consider adding these books to your list.
Elizabeth De Lay says
I really want to know about Orson Scott Card. I read the Pathfinder series already but I’d like my little sister to read them too. I don’t remeber there being anything bad. And also Meagan Spooner’s book Hunted.( My sis and I read it and it’s only got one bad word towards the end. ) Lisa T. Bergren’s River of Time series, Melanie Dickerson books, Jessica Day George, Donna Jo Napoli….I have over 60 authors that I want to check. I want to buy good books to read and make my own library. I read about 300 books a year and really fast so I have to have a ton by now 😉
Elizabeth De Lay says
Oops you already have some of those I recommended….what a bout Jennifer Donnelly, Sharon Creech, Jane Kirkpatrick, Kirby Larson, Claudia grey, Fonda lee, Kelly more, Beth Revis, etc. Take that! Hahaha
Clyde McCulley says
I would like for you to take look at my new book, “Panther Creek Mountain” about pre-teens having a wonderful clean and fun life on a mountain top in the 1950s. It received a 5 star review from Reader’s Choice .

I can’t thank you so much for this!!! Great list!

What a fantastic list! I’m the mother of three and a clean YA author myself. Would you consider adding my “Beauties from Ashes ” series to your list? Book one “Secrets” is available on Amazon now. Book two “The Uninvited” should be out this holiday season.
“Every girl has a secret she hopes the light will never find—but the demons already have.”

thank you so much for posting this Clean Book List for Tweens. My 12 1/2 year old daughter devours books at a HS level but we have run out of clean books for her. We so discouraged by how much sex, violence, drugs and language are in books they say are for pre-teens.
Keep adding to the list. This is a such a relief to find your site.
God bless you!
Deb
Crystal Sandow says
So happy to have found your list. Thank you for creating it!
An author I didn’t see when I skimmed through is Robin Jones Gunn. She has some amazing books for teen girls (christian themed)! The Christy Miller Series and the Sierra Jensen series in particular. There are now college age books, and books about some of the friends met in the original series. Her adult books follow the same trend and many of the same characters are found in them.
Jenni James is an author I’ve just found on amazon with both teen and adult stories (I watched her one movie, based on Not Cinderella’s Type, and read one of her adult books, which was clean). She advertises clean stories and I have not picked up a religious thread so far.
Meredith says
So happy I found your blog! I teach English at a small Christian private school and was having a hard time finding appropriate books (especially for girls) to stock my shelves with and you just gave me a great list to get started on!
Tabby says
First of all, this is a great list! A lot of the books here I have read or are still on my TBR list.
And second, I just released a book that is clean and fun for teens to read!

Thanks for the list of appropriate books. My son loved the Leven Thumps series (was his favorite) my girls loved Fablehaven series(which is amazing )
Christy says
Tula –
Thanks so much for sharing those, I know my older boys have read both those series, but it was such a long time ago I totally forgot about them. I am sure I will be able to add those to the list for sure. Thanks again!!
Timi Lisa Fogal says
Thank you so much for making this list. It really helped me choose books for my “turning 14 yrs. old in a week” daughter. It’s difficult to ask questions about language/ sexual “preference” etc., online without being ridiculed for being a parent concerned with what your child is exposed to.
Karis says
Seas Apart by Jeanna Janes is a great tween adventure/mystery story for both boys and girls. I especially liked that the parents are also main characters working alongside the kids’ adventure.
Jess says
CJ Redwine is a clean YA author
Matt Sprunt says
This is a great service you are providing. I have a three book series I originally wrote for my kids and then finally decided to publish. They are appropriate for all ages. The titles are, The Ancient Castle, The Ancient Book of Magic and The Ancient Amulet. All three can be purchased on Amazon.
There are so many raunchy books out there, so we need to get the word out to everyone that there are also good, fun, clean books out there. Thanks for your consideration.
Drew says
Thanks so much for this list. I’m tutoring high school students so I have to be super careful in my book selections for them.
Charles Cardin says
Hi Christy,
I would recommend ‘Light of the Lost’ by David Ian Flynn. A very entertaining archaeological mystery in the vein of Indiana Jones – with great teen characters. Super clean education.
Regards
Charles

I love this list! I think I’ve read almost every one so far and I’ve loved them all! I would definitely recommend the Ranger’s Apprentice series by John Flanagan. It’s set in the same world as the Brotherband Chronicles and even features some of the same charcters. I’ve read all 10 books or so in the series at least four times, they are amazing and written with the same wry humor as the Brotherband series (which I’ve also read many many times ;)) Happy reading!
Kim Stevens says
Thank you so much for making this list!!
Amy says
I LOVE your book lists! Thank you soooooo much – just wondered if you had read the rest of the books in the Michael Vey series – books 4-7?
Charlotte Kennedy says
Hello, I really love your list! These are a lot of great books I have never heard of, and I only read clean books.
Is it possible to get on your list? I work for His Everlasting Love Media. HisEverlastingLove.com
We publish clean books that teens would love. Currently, we only publish Regency books, but in 2019 we will also publish contemporary clean books.
Mandy says
Just fyi – you did say everyone has their own definition of clean but I got my daughter the best kind of magic based on your recommendation. Unfortunately it has the b word, jack -a and thats when my daughter decided to stop reading. Just thought I should give other moms a heads up if this is something they want to avoid.
Nanci Olsen says
Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer– All of the books I have read by Bauer are clean.
The False Prince series by Jennifer Nielsen– Really Great– All her books that I have read are clean books and good reads. They are all a safe bet.
You have the Brotherband series by John Flanagan but I didn’t see the Rangers Apprentice series by this author. They are all clean. Great series.
Amy says
This is such an awesome resource! Thanks for creating this list- I’ve referenced it often lately. The Greyson Gray series is another series to check out.
Traci says
One author you might like to check out is Kelly Oram. I love her books and they all are what I call clean. (maybe some kissing but nothing past that, and I don’t remember any swearing) Specifically look at “Cinder & Ella” about a disfigured high school girl who is just amazing and the famous guy who loves her, “The Avery Shaw Experiment – Science Squad book 1” a romance about a smart girl who learns about herself and matures through the book, “V is for Virgin” about a girl who believes in waiting until marriage and the high school rock star who wants to date her (its very clean with good message about self worth and sticking to your beliefs). My favs are Cinder & Ella and also V is for Virgin. 🙂
Also Emily Evans is a good writer. I liked her “Accidental” series (Accidental Rock Star, Accidental Movie Star, etc) Some of her books are Young Adult (or 17+), and some are for teens. Amazon does a pretty good job of helping you know which is which. 🙂
Kirsten says
Just so readers are aware if you want truly clean language books, you can use Amazon’s look inside feature to look for any words you are not comfortable with you teens reading frequently. For example, I did this with the Girl Who Dared to Think Series, and the word “damn” (which is a swear word for some, and not others) appears 13 times in the book in the connotation of not the location. Same book, the word “God” used as an expletive not describing the being, appears 16 times.
Christy says
Kirsten – What a great tip, I had no idea you could do this. Thanks so much!
Jocelyn says
Melanie Dickerson’s books are great, and romantic.
me says
Strange new girl/ brave new girl by Rachel Vincent is a great clean read
Kiki Smith says
Keeper of the Lost Cities is also a great one
The Selection Series has some…interesting…. parts to it, though.
Definitely would recommend the Lunar Chronicles, aswell
Great Job on Picking books!
