This list started as a compilation of clean books that my children or I have personally read. Since the demand for more clean books has been requested by many of you, we are updating the list with some of your suggestions and with books that we have found to be considered clean through research we have done. If a book on the list has personally been read by my family is will see this *** after the book title.
What is a “clean” book? I know everybody’s opinion may vary, but here is generally how we define a “clean” book. These books are not filled with swear words or sexual situations. None of these books have a mature 17+ rating. I generally err on the side of caution when it comes to “clean” books, but again, perspectives vary. While I made this list for teens, many of these books are entertaining for adults too. In addition to enjoying the stories, reading some of the same books that my teens have read has often provided opportunities for conversations that help build on the parent/teen relationship, which is always an added bonus.
Brandon Sanderson is one of my boys’ favorite author The books in this series are huge too, so it will keep your teens (or you) reading for awhile. You honestly can not go wrong with any of Brandon Sanderson’s books and you will find many of his books on our list.

This list is amazing! As a Young Adult author who tries very hard to write clean books, finding this post is so encouraging. Going to try to send you an email. 🙂

Kathy – We will be adding new books very soon. Sorry for the delay, my daughter got a job and that has cut into her reading time. I am so glad the list is helpful to you and we plan to keep it going!

What a great service for teen girls! I always wished for something like this for my girls, who are no longer teens. So, when I found the time–and the courage to put my work out there–I wrote the “Mystery History Series” that marries old-fashioned, yet modern-day mysteries, with some American history. I just finished writing the third book and I would be grateful for your review and , hopefully, a recommendation. I can send you copies or email the PDF manuscripts. Website listed below. Also on FB @sonnybarberbooks
The books are on Amazon and B&N.

I’m a career author, having written mainly for teens all through the years. I not only love to write for teens, but also hang out with them (youth sponsor at my local church).
This is an amazing service that you’ve offered here. It shows so much TLC! (As well as hours of work.)
I’m going to share your site on my Clean Teen Reads Facebook fan page!!
Keep up the good work!

Great list! How about Allie Strom and the Ring of Solomon (by me). The whole trilogy is clean and action packed 🙂
Valerie says
Thanks for this list! This is a great resource. The Girl of Fire and Thorns series is excellent by the way. The hero, unlike many, is a man of integrity and honor, unique in most teen or adult books. The heroine is an excellent narrator who is a good role model. The ending is satisfying without all the angsty drama attached to some of the teen novels today. I would recommend the whole series, including the novella. It can get a bit violent especially in the last book and there is a small discussion of sex and birth control but those take up a paragraph or two. The Cinder series is also excellent but does get more violent in the later novels and can become a bit uncomfortable even for me as an adult. Still I liked them and I think most teens above 13 could manage them. I also liked the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. Keep up the good work and you will be a resource for me in the future.

Check out the Muirwood series by Jeff Wheeler

This is great! It’s sad that publishers don’t seem to realize that just because the protagonist is a teen means it should be marketed to teens (and sometimes not even to adults in my opinion). Thank you so much!

Have you read The Crowd by Alleece Balts? I found it on Goodreads top clean teen shelf (top 10 or 15 maybe). I hadn’t heard of it before but it was good!

Please check out The Red Series (four books) by Amanda Witt. It is scary in parts but very clean, even though it has a romance subplot. It’s dystopia and maybe because of that boys really like it too (my two teenage sons loved it, and I know a 12-yr-old boy who did too).

Thank you so much for doing this! I think it is a shame that it has become so hard to find clean books these days. Books really should have a tag to alert parents what kind of content they contain, just like movies.

Could you Review Ivy Lane by Cathy Bramley, Please?
R Baker says
As you said, everyone’s definition of clean is different so to each his/her own. But I would add a few words of caution about Love & Gelato:
I bought the book for my two daughters to share after they had seen it in our local Deseret Book. I wrongly assumed anything sold there would be appropriate for them to read, especially since it’s recommended for 12 and up. I was wrong! My older daughter brought it to me and said she didn’t want to finish it. I asked why and discovered not only was the language crude (words like pissed, sex etc…) but the book is heavily focused on physical attraction which apparently got confused for “romance.” And, there was even a scene where the main character is being inappropriately touched by a stranger. Granted, compared to what’s out there for 12 year olds this isn’t the worst. But, I think there are much better options for both romance and travel adventure.
Tracy says
I found this blog post while searching for a list of clean/wholesome books for my 13 year old daughter to read. To be honest, I’m a little surprised at this list. It seems that the books overwhelmingly have to do with teen romance and crushes. Those are exactly the kind of books I’m trying to stay away from right now. My daughter has read a lot of books this year, which she has loved….and not one of them has crushes, flirting, boy/girl relationships. I’ve been on the lookout for more dating-free, crush-free, flirting-free books for young teens. It’s sad that so many teen YA books have to promote boyfriend/girlfriend relationships. Books can fill our children’s minds with so much fun and adventure….why throw dating in there at such a young age, as if it’s the normal thing to do at this age? My list is steadily growing, but I’m afraid most of these books won’t be on it.
Christy says
Hi Tracy,
Thanks for your comment, and no I don’t personally believe dating should be what younger teens read about. It’s a rule in our family that you aren’t allowed to date until you are 16. The books on this list fit a wide range from 12-18, so you will see some that work for a younger crowd and some that work for a slightly older crowd. While I agree more than half of the books on this list do contain “teen crushes” I can recommend several for you on this list that do not have to do with teen crushes. Also some may seem have a theme of teen crushes in many cases it is not a strong theme and they often have to do with family dynamics too. Here are few books that your child may enjoy:
Michael Vey Series
Adventures Wanted Series
Girl of Fire & Thorns (there is some romance themes, but honestly this is more about a strong female lead. It’s a good one!)
Stargirl
Rithmatist
Dark Life Duo
Unenchanted (again, this has some crush, but I wouldn’t rule this one out because of it. It’s a fun series & the fact that it is free on kindle is a bonus)
Christy Miller series is a great one and shouldn’t be rule out either.
Hope that helps! Don’t give up on the list, we try to update every month and we will continue to work on finding more from other genres as well.

For kids (and adults) who think it would be exciting to be a doctor: Kid Docs by J.W. Lynne.
Amazon description:
What if you could be a doctor by the time you were fourteen years old?
Connor became a doctor just two days ago–along with all of his friends. They are child prodigies who were hand-selected at just three years old to undergo intensive medical training as part of a controversial experiment called Kid Docs.
KID DOCS tells the story of fourteen-year-old Connor Hansen’s first days as an emergency room doctor. Connor experiences his first pangs of love (toward fifteen-year-old obstetrician, Cassie), deals with his explosive older brother (a sixteen-year-old heart surgeon), and tries to figure out why his friendship with fourteen-year-old fellow ER doctor Hannah has suddenly changed. At the same time, Connor learns to save lives and discovers that some lives cannot be saved.

I have a suggestion to add to your list. I recently read a trilogy fantasy/romance by Serena Clarke for YA. My grandson, age 14, just finished the first two and is now reading the third one. I have read them, also. The adventure kept the story moving and the sweet romance was touching. The reviews are great on amazon, too. It’s called The Isian Series: The Treasure of Isian, The Alliance of Isian, and The Secret of Isian. if you’re interested, the author’s website is https://serenaclarke.wordpress.com. I think you should add these books to your list of YA books.
Becky Darney says
What would you and your kids recommend for an 8 yr old 2nd grader at reads at a 9th grade level? She is just about finished with the Harry Potter series. I am desperately searching for something she can read over the summer months!
Christy says
@Becky I too had a child that read at a very high level in the 2nd grade, the hard part is even though they can read the words and understand them, most of the books at the 9th grade level are not necessarily content for 2nd graders. We chose to let him read some books that interested him even if they weren’t as high of a reading level. If she liked Harry Potter, I am sure she would like the Adventure’s Wanted series, the first one is called Slathbog’s Gold. The Chronicles of Narnia would be great too. Also check out the Fablehaven, Goose Girl, Michael Vey and the Wrinkle in Time series. I am guessing if she read and understood Harry Potter and wasn’t scared by some of the things in the book any of the books I mentioned should work for her.
Some books that my daughter loved that aren’t as high of a level, but are age appropriate are: Lemonade War (also a series), Ella Enchanted, Kingdom Keepers, Rules, and The One and Only Ivan.
I hope that gives you some suggestions. It sounds like you have an avid reader, that is so awesome!
Lauren Flauding says

As a teen who’s always looking for a clean read, the list is amazing! The entire Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer is clean, along with her stand alone ‘Heartless’. I’d like to suggest the Sixteenth Summer novels by Michelle Dalton. I’ve read the first two and they are very enjoyable, sweet, and clean!
Tamara says
Love that you are doing this. It’s so hard to find clean books. I’m always searching for clean books for my kids. Do you have anymore for boys?
Alyssa says
The Girl of Fire and Thorns is actually not ok. I did a book review and there is a sex scene in the third one. Also in the second book there is gay stuff and Elisa and Mara talking about sex.
Alyssa says
The Defiance series and the Ravenspire series by CJ Redwine are really really good and clean
Alyssa says
I recommend anything by Melanie Dickerson, John Flanagan’s Rangers Apprentice series is really good, also Jennifer A Nielsen’s The False Prince series and her other serie are really good. The Hunger Games is also clean so is the Tigers Curse series by Colleen Houck although it’s for older girls 14-… ages
Alyssa says
The Defy series by Sara B Larson is also clean but again for teen from ages 14 and up

I just found this list now and can’t wait to get started!
I’ve read a couple of the books and series listed and have loved everything that I’ve read that’s mentioned.
As a university student I often find it difficult to find well-written books that are targeted towards my age group that are clean and fall into my preferred genre.
I absolutely adored The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, I can’t recall if there was any foul language or not though, if you haven’t read it yet then definitely try it out!
Thanks for the list and all the time you’ve put into this.

I wanted to share an awesome book series to add to the list. It is called Daniel X. I have found that they are actually really clean compared to many books that I have read. (not that I read bad books…) They are pretty safe. A great story if you like action, friendship, and lovable characters.
