I am kicking off Frugal Food Week with our first cookbook review and giveaway. I am sharing my thoughts on The Frugal Foodie Cookbook: Waste-Not Recipes for the Wise Cook
.
The Frugal Foodie Cookbook is by Lara Starr with Lynette Shirk. This book is small in dimensions, but it is packed with lots of frugal food information, recipes and ideas. It reads more like a book than a cookbook. It contains lots of tips for getting the most value from your food. The Frugal Foodie shows you how to make smart choices when it comes to buying food.
Some of the features that I really liked about this book:
Cents-able Solutions: Savvy Solutions – They give you substitutions for lots of common recipe ingredients, like baking powder, corn syrup, cream of tarter, buttermilk and lots more. It is always frustrating when you start a recipe and find out you are out of something. This is going to be a big help for me.
Thrifty Gifts – I loved this section on thrifty food gifts you can give. They even teach you how to make your own Cherry Pie filling. My sister loves real cherry pie filling, this would make a super gift for her. I think I am going to give it a try.
Frugal Foodie Tips – All throughout this book their are fun frugal tips, I love reading them all.
Some things I am looking forward to making:
Teriyaki Chicken “Skewers” – I love Teriyaki Chicken and I am still looking for the perfect recipe. I am hoping this one is it.
3-in-1 Eye Opener mix (AKA your own personal Bisquick) They give you a recipe to make your own all purpose breakfast mix. I am all about saving time in the kitchen and this would be great to have for those mornings when the kids want a hot breakfast, but I don’t have time to start from scratch.
Orange Creamsicle Oatmeal Smoothie – I am not sure about oatmeal in my smoothies, but I am willing to give this a try. It sounds like it would be a great start to my morning.
This really is a fun book full of not only frugal food ideas, but tons of frugal ideas for around your house. They even give you recipes to make your own cleaning concoctions. You can pick up The Frugal Foodie Cookbook: Waste-Not Recipes for the Wise Cook
at Amazon for only $10.85, and it ships for free with Super Saver shipping. This would make a great stocking stuffer for any frugal fanatic.
