I saw this clever idea for mini mason jar cupcakes over at Club ChicaCircle where they used caulk on top of mini canning jars to make it look like a cupcake. Once I saw them, I knew I wanted to make some. I decided to switch it up a bit and go with a Valentine theme. You could easily make these for any holiday. I’ve got instructions for you, so you can make some too. I think they turned out super cute!
Supplies:
- Canning Jars (4 oz Quilted Jelly jars)
- White Caulk Tube (you should get 4 cupcakes out of one tube)
- White paint
- Clear Spray Finish
- Hearts (for cupcake toppers)
- Seed Beads (for sprinkles)
- Cupcake Wrappers
- Ribbon & Glue Dots
Tools
- Caulking Gun
- Paintbrush
- Glue Gun
- Utility Knife
The first thing you will want to do is paint the metal rim white. You won’t need to paint the lid since you will be covering it with the caulk. Once the white paint was dry I covered it with a spray coating of Krylon Crystal Clear sealer to the paint wouldn’t chip off.
Once everything is totally dry, you will want to use a hot glue gun to attach the lid to your painted rim.
Next you will want to add the caulk, which will be the “frosting’ of the cupcake. You will want to cut off the tip of the caulking tube with a utility knife. Make sure you don’t use anything with a serrated edge or your frosting won’t be smooth, it will have little lines in it.
I cut the top of fairly close to the top of the tube, so the caulking with come out thicker and more frosting like.
Start in the middle and work your way around frosting just as you would a cupcake. I am going to be honest, I bought one tube just so I could practice and it took me the whole tube before I got it right (I could be a slow learner though). You may want to get an extra tube just for practice. These tubes run around $2, and you should be able to get 4 cupcakes out of one tube.
Once you finish with the frosting, you can immediately add your cupcake topper (I used foam conversation hearts). You will also want to add the seed beads so they look like sprinkles on top of the cupcake. You will want to gently press the beads into the caulk so they will not fall off after it dries. Leave them to dry, I let mine dry overnight.
Once the top is dry you can add the candy of your choice to the jars and add the “frosting” lid.
To finish them off you can add a cupcake wrapper. I used my Silhouette SD to cut out a wrapper, but most craft or party stores carry cupcake wrappers (make sure you aren’t buying the liners that you bake cupcakes in). I also added a bow onto the rim of the jar with a Glue Dot, because I thought it needed a little something extra. I am very happy with the final product, I think they are adorable!
