January is my favorite time of year to shop Target, because there are SO MANY items that go clearance!! Many of the departments will be clearing out the old to bring in the new. I am sharing a list of departments and their possible 70% off markdown day this year, based on when the markdowns happened last year.
Please understand, these are just guesstimates based on last years markdowns, they could go down to 70% off at ANY time. To stay on top of the markdowns in each department, it’s best to “like” Thrifty and Thriving on Facebook, because I can post updates and photos while I am at the store.
Christmas Clearance
70% off – Friday, December 30th or Saturday, December 31st
(went 75% off Friday, December 31st last year)
90% off – Wednesday, January 4th
(went 90% off Wednesday, January 5th last year) **This markdown was later than in years past, so it could happen sooner**
Toy Clearance
70% off – Wednesday, January 11th or Thursday, January 12th
(went 75% off Wednesday, January 12th & Thursday, January 13th last year)
Baby Clearance
70% off – Monday, January 16th
(went 75% off Monday, January 17th last year)
Sporting Goods/Luggage
70% off – Wednesday, January 25th or Thursday, January 26th
(went 75% off Wednesday, January 26th & Thursday, January 27th last year)
Shoes
70% off – Thursday, January 17th or 24th
(this one varied by store, went 75% off on so many different days last year, but mainly January 18th & 25th)
Other Departments
70% off – Will happen all throughout January. Pay attention to their markdown schedule for the day markdowns usually take place for that department. Since it’s the start of a new year, Target could go all crazy on us and switch up their markdown schedule (this has been known to happen in the past, the regular markdown day for toys used to be Wednesdays several years ago) It seems to me that the majority of the clearance happens the last 2 weeks of January.
Here are a couple of things to remember:
- These departments will probably only go to 70% off instead of 75% off in year’s past, this seems to be Target’s new markdown level.
- You want to pay attention to the DAY the markdown took place. For example, the baby items went 75% off on Monday, January 17th last year. That means that this year, the markdown will probably still happen on a Monday (the baby departments usual markdown day), but the date will be different. If it happens on the same day, it would be Monday, January 16th this year.
- Clearance will vary by location. What one store has at 70% off, there is a chance it could still be full price at a different store.
- Markdown days/weeks can vary by location too.

Wanted to say thanks as well! Wish I would have written down dates from last year. I remember wondering when the good clearance would hit & never knowing!

Never knowing until I got there I should say. 😉

Thank you for all of your effort to help us save money. You directed me to Target Clearance in July, where I saved over $100 on baby stuff and toys . I can’t wait to save again. Thank you!

That’s one thing I dislike about Target– different prices at different stores. I hate buying something on clearance and then stopping at another store only to see the discount was greater at another location. It seems like a nationwide store should have the same prices everywhere or at least by region.

Is there a reason everything is 70 this year rather than 75
Christy says
@LIz Target has changed things, so the lowest their clearance goes is 70% off (except for holidays that should still go to 90% off). I am guessing Target is trying to make a little extra money with the extra 5% they are getting from not going to 75% off.

But, if you use your redcard, you’ll still get 5% off on top of the clearance prices…
iv says
i just got some toys 70% off

I have to agree with Dawn with the Target pricing. I check this blog and other blog pricing and my Target usually seems higher, the percent off prices seem to happen at different times, and even the sales seem to be different. For instance, all the UP & Up products are at least a $1 higher if not more. For instance, all the UP & Up products are at least a $1 higher if not more. Oh well.
Thanks for posting this. It at least gives me an idea and others on what to look for which is a great help.
