The Target receipts can be a little confusing! They don’t seem to consistently have the same pattern when you use a manufacturer coupon, some times is shows up underneath the item you bought and then other times all the manufacturer coupons will show up at the bottom of your receipt. Here are a few examples of some Target receipts.
Whenever you see an item with an arrow next to it, it means that this is a sale price, you will often see an arrow next to holiday markdowns as well. The holiday and seasonal markdowns are usually the ones that don’t have an individual red clearance sticker on them, they usually just have a sign announcing they are 50% or 75% off (these are usually the Halloween, Christmas, Easter, etc type clearance).
General:
- If you buy several of the exact same item, you will find the total for all those items on the right hand side of the receipt
- Notice, the total for the Oral B floss was $1.94 (just underneath you will see the individual cost, in this case is 2 @ $ .97)
- The 2 blush items I bought are not totaled together, because I bought 2 different shades.
Sale Items:
- You can see that I bough 2 packages of Skittles at $2.00
- The receipt shows a total of $4.00
- The receipt also shows the amount I saved from regular prices (in this case $1.18 off two)
Target Store Coupons:
- The Target store coupons are usually deducted just under the item you purchased
- It will adjust the price of the item to what the total would be after the Target coupon is applied
- You can see in the receipt at the top, I bought Target tissue at $ .99, the total shows $ .49, because I used a $ .50/1 Target coupon
- If you are to return an item you bought with a Target coupon, you will receive the adjusted price back (in the case of the tissue $ .49)
Manufacturer Coupons:
- The decuctions for the manufacturer coupons will usually end up at the bottom of your receipt (you can see all the coupons that were deducted at the bottom of the receipt at the very top of this post).
- Other times, you will find the manufacturer coupon is deducted just under the product you purchased, and not at the bottom of the recipt. (I have no idea why this isn’t consistent, why sometimes it’s under the item you buy and other times it is all at the bottom of your receipt).
- The section on your receipt will be titled “Special Promotion”
- The total of these items will be reduced by the cost of the FREE gift card
- They add in the price of the gift card when they scan it & then it gets subtracted off
- All items must be returned for a FULL refund (including the gift card)
- If you return an item without the gift card, your refund will be adjusted down to the price you paid minus the gift card
- The discounted price will show up on the right hand side
- You will see the amount you saved and the regular price under neath
Tips:
- Try to watch as you checkout, if things aren’t ringing up properly or the coupons are being deducted at the correct amount, politely point it out to the cashier.
- Have patience! I know this isn’t always easy when the person behind you is “huffing and puffing” or the cashier isn’t very knowledgeable.
- If they say they can’t accept a coupon for a certain reason and you were only buying the item because it was a great deal, have them take it off your order (I have no problem removing items that are not a good deal!)
- If you can’t keep an eye on things at the checkout, check your receipt before you leave.
- If you are done checking out and there was a mistake, you will need to go to the customer service counter to have it fixed.
- Sometimes, if it’s a small mistake, I just let it go. It’s not worth 5-10 minutes of frustration just to save an extra buck.

*Feel free to have your item corrected at the checkout if you think it rang up incorrectly! There is a “Fix it fast” option on the register for things like this so you DON’T have to wait in another line at the Guest Service Desk. Same if you forgot to give the cashier your coupons. They’ll just scan them at the register and give you the cash back.
* When you return an item you received a free giftcard with you don’t have to return the giftcard. In most cases people have used the giftcard already or given it as a gift to someone else. The amount will be subtracted from your total return.

@Beth I have never had them offer a “fix it fast” option, they always direct me to the customer service desk. Is this option available after they have finished checking you out, because that is what I am referring to? I often have items fixed while I am checking out, but after the transaction is complete, I have always had to go over to the customer service desk
True, you can return an item without a gift card, but if you want the FULL PRICE YOU PAID, you will need to return the gift card too.

“Occasionally, you will find the manufacturer coupon is deducted just under the product you purchased (I have no idea why this isn’t consitent).”
In regards to this, it is because in order to receive ALL of your money back you must return each item (minus coupons of course) that is in-between the dotted lines. Most times a gift card is involved and you must return the card along with the item(s) or you will not receive a full refund, as posted above in the comments. Also, there is not a “fix it fast” button on the registers. In order to fix a mistake (with the exception of coupons which yes, can be added on after your transaction is complete) you must go to guest services and they will fix it there.

@Amanda, If you see in the first receipt all of the manufacturer coupon came off at the bottom of the receipt. Then on the second receipt the manufacturer coupon I used for the game came off, and it showed up under the item I bought which was in the middle of my receipt, not at the bottom like all of the other coupons I used. Does that make sense?
There doesn’t seem to be any consistency, some times they all are listed at the bottom of the receipt and other times they are listed just under the item, but the are all manufacturer coupons. Most of these were single items, and none of them involved a gift card.
Beth says
The option to “Fix it Fast” is after the transcation is complete. The cashier scans the barcode at the top of the receipt and it pops up as one of two options. It’s been there for about 5 years.
Christy says
@Beth I wonder if this option is only used when there aren’t any other customers in line, that never happens to me at Target. 🙂

In regards to the manufactur’s coupons not consistently showing with the item or at the bottom of the reciept: I belive it has to do more with if the cashier has to overide the coupon to get it to go through or if it scans automatically at the checkout. I’ve seen it take a coupon and then ask the cashier how much is this coupon for? alot of times when the correct item is purchased the system still asks the cashier to accept or decline the coupon?
Christy says
@Jayme OOH, I wonder if that is why it happens. I will have to watch next time I check out and see if it happens that way. That would totally make sense. Aren’t you clever!
Beth says
Haaha! The cashiers are supposed to use it regularly but I think it’s easier to send people to Guest Service when there are people behind in line. They also don’t think about it right away because it’s not something they have to do very much. That is good thinking about the coupons being pushed through and automatically ringing and I think that is what it might be but I don’t know for sure about that one. I’ve also thought it might be when coupons are for the purchase of more than 1 or a combination of items (ex: Buy 1 lunchmeat and 1 Cheese and save whatever). The combined items would be the ones at the bottom and the specific coupons would be right under the item. Just a guess! No onw has ever asked that before but I’ll have to investigate now!
Christy says
@Beth Your theory might work too, I will have to check my receipts and see if there is a pattern like that.
We might actually be able to make sense of the crazy receipts!

Be careful when buying items that offer a free gift card. One time I bought two of an item that triggered a gift card. The cashier gave me the gift card immediately after ringing up the two items. I had a coupon making one of those two items free (I don’t remember whether it was a Target coupon or a mfg coupon.), and when the cashier ran through that coupon, the computer took off the full amount for the item, but then it added a $5 charge back to my total for the “free” gift card I had been given. Apparently, getting one of those items free with a coupon cancels out the gift card offer. If you’re not paying attention you may pay for the gift card you thought you were getting for free. My point is that even if things appear to be scanning correctly as you go, adjustments sometimes happen in the computer after the fact.
The best way for me personally to make sure things ring up correctly at Target is to figure up what my net total before tax should be before reaching the cashier. I then try to watch as everything is scanned to make sure it scans correctly. If the total doesn’t come out close (within a dollar), I let them know if I suspect a particular coupon didn’t ring up, or take my receipt to CS after finding the error myself.

Does anyone know what the ^ symbol means on a Target receipt?
Pat Kershasky says
It was an egg timer . The receipt says Manuel Dial. Why can’t the exact word be used. The clerk told me to look up the # 070052296.
Sarah Winckler says
Dawn, I believe the ^ shows it is part of a promotional bundle. I don’t have an example receipt handy, but I think that an explanation is printed on the bottom of the receipt.

So what about when you have a Target coupon and a manufacturer coupon? How does that come out on the receipt? For example, I have a mfr coupon for Purina dog treats for $3 off of 2. I also have a Target Purina dog treats coupon for $3 off of 1. Thanks!

Where is the order number.. to add to a babylist.. registry?
Sherry says
What are all the numbers on the left side of each item. These do not appear to be barcodes. I have something listed as “CONTAINER CA”. It is under stationary office. The number beside it is 053240505. This doesn’t match anything. I like the barcode numbers on the receipt that way I can match things and know for sure I have the right receipt for that item. I think the actual item for this discription is a Tropical scented candle in the shape of a pineapple. Barcode 8 1106701168 3.
