Seriously, nothing quite beats a yummy Gyro with Tzatziki sauce! I used to only buy them from food trucks until it dawned on me that I could make my own at home. I’m so glad I did! My family loves this recipe.
Steak Gyro with Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 lb flank steak
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 3 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- Juice from 1/2 of a lemon
- 8 small naan bread (you can substitute with pita bread)
- 1/2 cup of red onion sliced
- 1 cup of sliced cherry tomatoes
- 1/2 cup feta cheese
- Romaine lettuce
Tzatziki Sauce
- 1 medium cucumber
- 2 cups of plain greek yogurt
- 4 cloves garlic minced
- 1/3 cup of chopped fresh dill
- Juice from 1/2 lemon
- Salt
- Pepper
Place steak, olive oil, garlic, oregano, salt, pepper, and lemon juice into large resealable bag. Refrigerate 1-8 hours.
For Tzatziki sauce, peel and cut cucumber in half lengthwise. Using a tip of a spoon remove the seeds from the center. Salt generously and let sit for 5 minutes. After five minutes add cucumber to food processor or blender. Add remaining sauce ingredients to blender or food processor and pulse until combined. Depending if you like your sauce chunky or smooth will determine the amount of time in the blender.
Cook marinated steak for 3-6 minutes per side depending on thickness and your desired doneness. I like mine medium rare.
Transfer steak to cutting board and allow to rest a few minutes before slicing into thin strips.
Assemble gyros with meat, lettuce, sliced red onions, feta cheese and drizzle with tzatziki sauce. Top with pepper and fresh squeezed lemon. This recipe also works with chicken and it is so good! Enjoy!
