Listing on Ebay
When it comes to actually listing your items on Ebay, it is super easy. Ebay has really made things so much easier than when I first started selling years ago.
Here are a few key things you need to remember when you list:
1. Take a picture of your item, it will sell much better with a photo.
2. Pay attention to when you list your item. You want to make sure that you don’t list it when a holiday is coming up. For example you would not have wanted your auction to end on Halloween, not many people are home that night looking at Ebay. Also, a 3 day weekend is not a good time to list, because there will be less traffic.
3. Ebay has a new thing where they give you your first 5 auctions listed for free. This means that ONLY the listing fee is free. You will still have to pay the final values fee. You can see the fees here:
The 5 items that are free will have a final value fee of 8.75% on the total sale price. The other item you list will have a final value fee of 8.75 of the first $25, and an additional 3.5 % of anything above and beyond the $25. So, you will want to list your first 5 items as less expensive items, so you will pay less in final value fees.
Here is some examples that will document this for you, using both a less expensive and more expensive item. I am not documenting the Buy it now and other fees, just the listing and final value fees.
Item: Girls Gymboree Dress
I want to list this item for $19.95 with a Buy it now of $25.00, we will pretend that is sells for $24.95
1st 5 items free listing
Listing fee = FREE
Final Value fee = $2.19
Total Fees = 2.19
Regular listing
List fee = .55
Final Value fee 2.19
Total fees = 2.74
For this item let’s say I am listing a collector Lego item that starts at $99.95, with a Buy it Now of $150.00. It also sells for the Buy it now price.
Item: Collector Lego
1st 5 items free listing
listing fee = FREE
Final values fee (8.75) = 13.13
Total fees = 13.13
regular listing
listing fee = 2.00
Final values fee (8.75 of first $25) = 2.19
fee 3.5% of 125.00 = 4.38
Total fees = 8.57
Getting Started
1. Log into your ebay account
2. Click on the “sell” tab at the top of the page.
3. Type in what it is that you are selling, it will help you find the correct category to list it under.
4. Select the category that matches and “continue”
You will be brought to the page where you enter all of your information.
Title – Use as much descriptions as possible, & CHECK YOUR SPELLING!
Here are some abbreviations:
NIB = New in Box
NWT = New with Tags
(I personally would skip the subtitle, I don’t think it’s necessary)
Pictures – Add your picture, your first picture is free each additional photo will be $ .15
Description – This is where you type the description of your item. Be as descriptive as possible. If you are selling previously worn clothes, make sure to list any flaws it may have. Lots of people want to know if the item comes for a smoke free or pet free home, so you might want to list that in the description.
Listing Designer – I would skip this, it is not a necessity.
Starting Price – This is where you will list the starting price of your auction
Buy it Now Price – If you want to do a Buy it Now price you will list the price in the box. I know that in the past you have needed a certain number of feedback before you can use this option.
Duration – I always go with a 7 day auction. A 10 day auction is an additional .40, and I really don’t think it is necessary. Your auction will get lots of views within the 7 day period.
Pay Pal – Make sure you check the box if you accept pay pal. I really think this is a must, it makes it so much more convenient for both the seller and the buyer.
Shipping – Choose the shipping options for your buyers, and let them know the cost.
Sales Tax – There is no sales tax necessary unless you are a business.
Click the “continue” button. You will review your listing and then submit your listing.
It really is easy!
