We will not be buying Halloween costumes for my kids this year. Why? I don’t believe it isn’t a necessity. Yes, I understand that money isn’t only for necessities, it is also for fun. So, before you all go thinking I am the meanest mom EVER, let me explain a few points that helped me come to this decision.
1. Halloween has NEVER been a big deal for our family. We have never gone all out and bought expensive costumes. We have used pieces we have had around the house and added items we found from the thrift store. We have bought entire costumes before if they were a decent price, but I have never been someone that can spend a large amount of money on a costume.
2. My kids have a HUGE costume box full of items that they can use to put a costume together. We have previous years costumes, capes, hats, light sabers, swords, etc. Seriously, there are tons of items they can use. We have always saved our costume type items for fun play, halloween or times when the kids need to put a costume together for a character they are playing at school or in a play.
3. I am teaching my children that it is not necessary to go out and spend money. You can use items you have on hand. We will work together to come up with some costumes using items we already own. We can also make some creative costumes. I have fond memories of making my own costumes when I was a kid. My favorite and most creative (in my opinion) was the year I was a Juke Box. I took a big box, drew on all the buttons and fun stuff. I cut out a hole for them to put the candy in (the slot you would normally put the money in). I had a handheld radio with me inside of my costume, and whenever somebody put candy in the slot I would turn on the radio. Just like a regular juke box would work. Seriously, I was so proud!
So, there you go! We won’t be spending a dime. We are going to be resourceful and spend some quality time together getting creative. I will be sure to share the final results of what we come up with. Anybody have any clever ideas to get us started?
