The following is a guest post from my son Jordan, who is a Nook owner and an avid reader!
Looking to get an e-reader, but worried about not wanting to spend money on books? Well, your in luck! There are several opportunities out there to get FREE e-books. Here are four of the best ways to get FREE e-books.
1. Local Libraries (Overdrive): Many local libraries will actually have an online database of e-books that you can check out. With the use of Overdrive, software that allows you to check out and download e-books to your reader device, you can have access to a large supply of books in several formats including audio-book formats if you prefer. Kindle is now supported by Overdrive, so they should work with most library systems now. You can view the King County Library selection HERE.
2. Project Gutenberg: Project Gutenberg is a great site for free classic books that are now public domain titles, meaning nobody has the rights to them anymore. There are over 100,000 classic books that are free to download in just about any format that you would need, meaning you can download it to any mobile device you own.
3. Lend Ink: LendInk.com is a place where you can have other e-reader owners lend you their books using the technology already present in your reader. You can request books that you want to loan and Lend Ink searches their database of members who own that book. They will send the book owners an email, and then they will loan you the book.
4. Online Book Store: Both Amazon (Kindle) and Barnes & Noble (Nook) offer books that you can download for FREE! Head on over to Amazon to view the Top 100 FREE Kindle books, or check out all the FREE nookbooks that are available at Barnes and Noble. You don’t even need to have an official Kindle or Nook, you can download an app that will allow you to use your mobile phone or computer to read the books. Download the Kindle app HERE, or the Nook app HERE.
Using these tips for finding FREE e-books should considerably reduce the amount that you spend on you e-reader. Happy Reading!

Well said, Jordan! I installed the Kindle App on my Android phone and am loving it! I still prefer reading a printed book, but with three kids and on the go so much, the Kindle App allows me to take a book on the go without actually having to pack the book.

For the Kindle, one of the best resources is http://www.pixelofink.com. They compile all of the available free books, even ones that are only up for a short time. They also have a bargain book section that covers books that are under a $1.

I use https://www.booklending.com and I love it! I just got my first borrowed book and I am loving it! I will definitely check out the others that you listed. But, yes, such a shame that Overdrive doesnt work with kindle 🙁 It would have been nice to use my library for me still instead of just the kids. Oh well!

Hello,
I just got a Kindle for my birthday last week…I did some research and, although library e-books are not Kindle-compatible, there are free downloadable content converters that will allow you to convert and ePub book to a Kindle-friendly version. Do a google search and enjoy!

Thanks for the info! I have been wanting an ereader but have hesitated because I get so many of my books from the library. Now that I know about these free lending options, I think I am going to get a Nook!

Also try lendle.com for Kindle books. It’s free to join and as long as you’re in good standing – meaning you’re lending and not just borrowing – it’s a great system. The only downside is uploading your collection. At one time they had a sync feature, but Amazon made them disable it. (boo!)

Hi would you mind letting me know which web host you’re using? I’ve loaded your blog in 3 completely different web browsers and I must say this blog loads
a lot faster then most. Can you suggest a good internet hosting provider at a
reasonable price? Kudos, I appreciate it!
