Do you have a do-over moment? You know, one of those times when you would do things differently, and not make the same mistakes. Maybe it’s the time you dropped your newborn son on a cactus, or the time you finally got to drive your Mom’s sports car, except when you parked it in the driveway you forgot to put it in park and you Dad found the car in the neighbors yard, because it rolled across the street and landed their. (Yep, those happened to me) We all have do-over moments! I have quite a few, but since I blog about being frugal, I am going to share one of my money wasting “do-over moments” with you.
We had just bought an entertainment center (we got a great deal on it, that’s not the part I wish I could do over). Since it was large, it was going to take up a large portion of our family room wall. We had been wanting to paint our plain stark white walls for awhile, so my husband suggested we paint before we put the entertainment center against the wall. Sounded good to me, I was game!
I headed to the local hardware store and brought home some of those handy paint chips. I finally decided on several decent beige colors and bought a couple of those small paint samples. I didn’t like any of them, so I headed back to the store to buy more samples. I finally got tired of wasting all my hard earned money on samples, I decided that I was sure I could pick the right color just by looking at the paint chips. Afterall, I ruled out about 10 colors, so how many other versions of beige could there be. In case you are wondering, there were A LOT more versions of beige.
I decided on a color and bought a great big 5 gallon bucket in order for me to have enough paint for the family room, kitchen and dining room. I painted for a couple of days and once I finally finished, I sat down to admire my work, and…my wall were peach. I was so bummed, I wasn’t going for peach. I didn’t want all that money that I spent on my 5 gallon bucket of paint to go to waste, so I lived with it…for about 2 weeks until I couldn’t stand it anymore.
I headed to the store determined to buy one last sample that would be THE ONE. Luckily, I finally found a color I loved. Sadly, I didn’t put the lid on the sample and I spilled it all over our white kitchen floor. I wouldn’t mind re-doing that part too.
The story has a happy ending! I finally got a room with a paint color I loved. I did have to do twice as much work and pay twice as much money than I would have if I did the job properly the first time. I wish I would have continued to pay for samples until I found the color I loved. I was only one or two paint samples away from choosing the right color anyway. Making mistakes with money can be so frustrating!
