Most stores have some major sales to clear out the holiday/winter merchandise in order to bring in all the new spring merchandise. Here are some of my favorite sales that happen each year. I am including the date the sales started last year, so it will give you and idea of when they may happen this year.
Target – The first thing, is the Christmas clearance. The Christmas items will go on sale 50% off the day after Christmas. I wait to do my shopping until it hits 75% and 90% off. The Christmas clearance went 75% off on 12/30 last year. You can see the items I picked up last year HERE. You will want to look for the following items to save you some money on everyday items:
- Wrapping paper you can use for birthdays (stripes, dots, etc.)
- Candy you can use for baking, Valentine’s or Easter
- Decorations that can be used year round (example: silver bowls or candle holders)
- Holiday Everyday food items (example: Ritz w/snowflakes on them)
- Stocking Stuffers you can use for Easter Baskets
- Everyday Items with holiday packaging (Ziploc bags or soaps with winter scents)
The other markdowns you will want to watch for is in each department. Target will be clearing out the old to bring in the new. Many items will go 75% off. The Target Toy clearance is a big one! I look forward to it every year, it is how I stock up on birthday presents for the entire year. Last year, the markdown to 75% off started around 1/15. I look forward to this sale every year, so I will definitely keep you updated on when it happens.
Old Navy – Every year in January, Old Navy will have a sale where they will take an additional 50% off the clearance prices. Last year the sale started on 1/16. You can get some great deals, because a lot of the items will already be marked down to 50% off or more. The total of savings 75% off or more.
Yankee Candle – Yankee Candle will have a final reduction on all remaining holiday gift baskets and some candles. You will be able to find all remaining gift sets marked down to 75% off. I was able to pick up the cutest Snowman gift baskets to give as teacher gifts this year for only $4.99 (reg 19.99). Last year’s 75% off sale started 1/14. You may be able to use a coupon code to make the deal even sweeter. There is a $10 off $25 coupon HERE (expires 1/16/10).
JCPenney – JCPenney will take an additional 50% off all clearance prices, for a total of 75% off the original price. This is a great way to buy clothing that you will need for next year. I have mentioned before this is how I buy a lot of our clothing, and it saves us a ton of money. Last years markdown happened on 1/29. Often times there will be coupons to use on top of the clearance prices also.
You will find lots of markdowns in most stores starting in the middle of January, just look for those clearance racks and buy ahead of time to save yourself some money!
