I am going to be redecorating my daughter’s room, and I am going to take you all along for the ride! ย (Details and photos coming next week!) ย When I re-do a room, it isn’t usually a quick get it done in a weekend kind of thing. ย I like to do things frugally, so I pick up pieces on clearance here and there until I have enough items that will help me to finally start putting the room together.
The thing that works best for me is to start with an inspiration piece – something that I LOVE! ย I love Target and clearance deals, so my inspiration pieces often come from there. ย Nothing is more inspiring than an item at 75% off, right? ย I am going to give you some examples with items that I picked up for my son’s room, over 7 years ago.
We will start with the inspiration piece! ย I saw this old gas pump bookcase in a Target ad probably about 8 years ago. ย I fell in love with it!! ย I thought it would be so much fun to decorate my son’s room with a theme that went around the bookcase. ย Unfortunately, I saw that bookcase when things weren’t the best for us financially, so I knew purchasing it was out of the question. ย I waited!
I know that everything in Target will eventually be clearanced, and I was hoping to grab it at 75% off. ย A girl can dream, right? ย I had to wait for over a year! ย It finally went on clearance, but I had to wait for 50% off, beccause I couldn’t afford anything more than that. ย I went to Target the day it should be 50% off, and it was gone. ย I called every store, and nobody had any left. ย My dream of a super cute boys room that involved a gas station bookcase had died!
I was at Target one day and I spotted my beloved bookcase on an end cap. ย I think I squealed! ย Somebody must have returned it. ย I ran back up to the front of the store to grab a cart. ย I was afraid somebody might steal my bookcase while I was grabbing a cart (please tell me I am not the only one that worries something will disappear while you are grabbing a cart). ย When I put it in my cart I realized that it had now been clearanced to 75% off – I squealed again!
Now that I had my inspiration piece, I was able to add these other pieces, all at great prices too! ย It took me several months to gather all of these pieces. ย I never try to decorate in a hurry, I can find the best deals if I gather pieces slowly and just wait for clearance deals to pop up. ย Here are the other items I was able to find:
Quilt for his bed at 50% off
Knobs for the dresser at 75% off
Propellor coat hook at 50% off
Matching Wall shelf at 75% 0ff
Bookcase at 50% off
Gas Pump Light at 75% off and a denim valance (which stayed at our old house) at 75% off
I will be back next week to show you the inspiration piece that I picked up (at 75% off – of course) for my daughter’s room. ย It should be fun! ย I would love to hear what you do to save some money when decorating your home.

My son has the wall shelf, propeller shelf, and the pillow sham. I got them on clearance at Target too. It has worked so well for soo long now, we love it!! Over the years we have found a lot of pieces that have coordinated at different stores. I love that its versatile and something that can grow with them!

Loved the comment about worrying while you ran back for a cart – and no, you are not alone in that ๐ Can’t wait to see what you do with your daughters room. We are in the midst of remodeling our kids rooms as well. So much fun!

I love these tips!!! I do the same kind of thing… from the Company Store I just purchased my daughters bunk bed bedding. 2 quilts, 2 shams, and one darling owl pillow for $160 including tax and shipping. Waiting for your favorite items to go on clearance makes them that much more enjoyable!!!

Wow – can’t believe you found most of that for 75% off at Target! What a fun theme for his room! Can’t wait to see the inspiration piece for your daughter’s bedroom!

My son wants a Hot Wheels room when our home remodel is done. It’s about a month away from completion and I have everything I need when his room is ready to go. I like Target, but I can’t ever find any clearance stuff unfortunately, you’re lucky! I’ve had much better luck online if you can believe that. I got a red/black racecar themed bookshelf and end table on Amazon.com after Christmas for around 70% off. Then a few days ago I found the Hot Wheels removable border and wall decals on amazon for $10, marked down from $50! I had gotten the deal on LivingSocial $10 for $20 amazon card, so I used that to buy a Hot Wheels alarm clock and of course everything shipped free with Amazon Mom. I’ll paint his room a light gray (found 2 cans clearanced at Home Depot, they were mixed and someone didn’t want them), and with his Jeep bed that my SIL made out of repurposed Jeep parts from a junkyard, he is going to have one killer Hot Wheels room for under $100!

Christy,
I have just dragged my large item to the nearest heip phone and asked for help. They will always bring me a flat bed or a cart.
Also, you didn’t need to leave the denim valance at your old house. My friend is an agent and she always writes it in the contract for the sale of the home that the window treatments aren’t included. Think of it why would someone else want the window treatments that match your decore?
Christy says
Beth – We just left the valance because it wouldn’t work in the new house anyway. In my boys previous room it was one bigger window. In the newer house there are 3 bedroom windows that are narrow and tall. We didn’t have anywhere else to use it. The same goes with most of the other curtains we had in the house.
The people that we bought our house from, left all of their curtains for us too. They were neutral, and they all worked out perfect for us. I was glad they did!

Ooh – I am looking for items like this gas pump for my son’s room to go with his vintage truck bedding (Bryce from Pottery Barn Kids). I hope I can find them somewhere!! They’d be perfect for us. ๐

Can you please tell me what the gas tank bookshelf was worth at target when you originally saw it, at full price? My home burned down and my son had that in his room and I need to claim it for insurance. Thanks for any help.
Christy says
@Kristi I am so sorry to hear about your house fire. The retail price on the book shelf was $89.99.

We just found one used. How do you change the bulb in the light?
