This list started as a compilation of clean books that my children or I have personally read. Since the demand for more clean books has been requested by many of you, we are updating the list with some of your suggestions and with books that we have found to be considered clean through research we have done. If a book on the list has personally been read by my family is will see this *** after the book title.
What is a “clean” book? I know everybody’s opinion may vary, but here is generally how we define a “clean” book. These books are not filled with swear words or sexual situations. None of these books have a mature 17+ rating. I generally err on the side of caution when it comes to “clean” books, but again, perspectives vary. While I made this list for teens, many of these books are entertaining for adults too. In addition to enjoying the stories, reading some of the same books that my teens have read has often provided opportunities for conversations that help build on the parent/teen relationship, which is always an added bonus.

Brandon Sanderson is one of my boys’ favorite author The books in this series are huge too, so it will keep your teens (or you) reading for awhile. You honestly can not go wrong with any of Brandon Sanderson’s books and you will find many of his books on our list.

I’ve had several recommendations to add The Ranger’s Apprentice series to the list. One of my boys has read the entire series (it was a very long time ago though). My daughter had read many Kasie West books, she is quickly becoming an “auto-buy” author for my daughter. Her favorite was the The Distance Between Us, it has some fun witty banter. The Pivot Point 2-book series was another fun one too. Other than Pivot Point, the rest of the books are stand alone books.

The Selection Series by Kiera Cass is a popular one. My daughter has read the entire series and enjoyed them all. I will say that several people have mentioned that they do not consider all of these books appropriate. My daughter read these several years ago and she honestly doesn’t remember anything hugely inappropriate. Proceed with caution if you are concerned.

I have included links for all of these books at Amazon for both the print and Kindle editions. I highly recommend checking to see if these books are available at your library. I love, love, love my library system and I especially love the fact that I can check out ebooks with the OverDrive Media Console (it’s the coolest thing ever – no more late fees!)
Don’t forget to leave suggestions for books we can add to this list. Happy reading!

Thank you as a mom to a 14 year old. She has started to venture into the teen sections and I often wonder. Now I can grab some books for her and rest assured!
Thank you so much! I am always on the lookout for clean books for my voracious reader (age 12)!
I really enjoyed The Twelve Dancing Princesses series by Jessica Day George as well as The Princess and the Hound by Mette Ivie Harrison.
The Shadow of the Bear and the other books by Regina Domain.
Thank you so much for making this list. My daughter is 12 and has always read on a higher level than kids her age, and so some of the books that are on her reading level aren’t necessarily on her “maturity” level, so this is nice to find. I will check back often! Thank you!
I really appreciate this list it is hard to know what books are clean before you read them. I also found any jenni james books clean and fun to read as well as Rachel ann nunes. But a book i think everyone should read is the blue sword by robin mckinley it is my all time favorite book thank you for the list (16)
Coming from a teenager, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate you listing books that don’t make me uncomfortable! Its really nice to not have to worry about things getting sketchy while reading:)
Any new books for the list? 🙂
@Tanya Yes, we have a few to add to the list very soon. Things have been slow lately, my daughter is in a play at school so she has been practicing for nearly 2 months, so her reading time has been cut down. I’ll be sure to update as soon as we get it updated.
I absolutely love this list and have most of the books on here. Here are some really good suggestions for more clean books 🙂
Insignia by S.J. Kincaid
Starters by Lissa price
Perfectly Dateless by Kristin Billerbeck
Anomaly by Krista Mcgee
If We Survive by Andrew Klavan
Motorcycles, Sushi, and One Strange Book by Nancy Rue
There You’ll Find Me by Jenny B. Jones
Matched by Allie Condie
Christy Miller series by Robin Jones Gunn
Shadow Children series by Margaret Peterson Haddix
The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
These are some of my favourites and all 100% clean!
@Damara Thanks so much for your nice long list. My daughter has read the Christy Miller series and we will be adding it to the list soon. We both have read Matched, but I totally forgot about that one. We will be checking into all of your other great suggestions as soon as we can.
I want to thank everyone for your suggestions, we are working out way through all of them. It just takes awhile. : )
What a great idea! I would love to see a similar list for boys-especially books with boy appeal that don’t contain violence. I have been really shocked at how violent and graphic many popular novels marketed to teens are. It’s particularly hard if you have a child who reads a bit above his age that you don’t want exposed to, “Mature,” content. Maybe one of your sons would have some good suggestions!
PS
I see now that your son did recommend some on this list!
I will definitely check them out!
Maegen – I can definitely put together a list for boys, my oldest son reads like CRAZY!! Plus I have 2 other teen boys that read too. My son was the one that recommended the Brandon Sanderson book and the 2 in the Dark Life series on this list (they would work for boys and girls). Off the top of my head I can also recommend the Michael Vey series if your son hasn’t read those yet. I will see about compiling a list after the holidays. Hopefully it will be nice and long! We’re just now making our way through girl books (only one girl here) but we have years and years experience with reading books aimed more toward boys.
Thank you for making a list like this! It is nice to know I am not the only person who appreciates clean YA. In terms of recommendations I suggest you check out the books by K.M. Shea, especially Princess Ahira and her Timeless Fairytale series. She often does free book promotions so if you get lucky you might be able to get it for free. 🙂
@Sara Thanks for the recommendations. I noticed that her books are FREE with Kindle Unlimited and I have that right now, so I will add them to my reading list.
The christy miller series is followed by several other connecting series that are amazing, i have read every one of them and im so in love with the characters and stories!!
Thank you for the list! I have been struggling to find books for my daughter (11 yrs) that are clean. The biggest problem is that she is required to read books for school that are at the 880 Lexile level or higher…finding books that are appropriate and clean at the level is very difficult. I checked the level of most books on this list and unfortunately they are almost all under that. Does anyone have suggestions that are clean but a slightly higher reading level? Thanks!
Don’t Die, My Love by Lurlene McDaniel
I’ve learn several just right stuff here. Definitely
worth bookmarking for revisiting. I wonder how much effort you place to make this kind
of wonderful informative site.
Thank you for your reviews. I am the mom of a young 7th grader who is a voracious reader. I don’t have time to pre-read books, and she is always buried in books. I am very careful about what I let her read, and your reviews on this site give me a great deal of guidance. I look forward to your updates because we are always looking for something new for her. Yours is the only site I have been able to find like this, and I cannot thank you enough for your time. It definitely helps in guiding my daughter in a positive way through these difficult and confusing years!
I just released a paranormal “sweet” romance involving mermaids and mystery entitled, “Waters Of Change”, available on Amazon. I too am a mother to four children and cringe at the thought of them getting ahold of the junk that is out there. If my daughters can’t read what I publish without me blushing, why write it?
Might I add that the book would be suitable for 15+ yrs. There is a brief scene in the prologue where two women are drunk (it isn’t condoned), and a kiss (no heavy petting).
Amy Astorga
@Amy Astorga Congrats on the book! My daughter and I look forward to reading it.
Oh, thank you! Let me know what you think!
You should add the Flavia De Luce books to this list. They are not for the faint-hearted reader, as they are long and have many large words in them, but are clean and funny murder mystery books. The first book is titled “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie”.
Wow! I am so impressed. It has been something I have talked about for years. I am a Library Media Clerk at an Elementary School. I wished there was such a list. I avoid reading Adult books due to their content. I prefer to read the teen books because most of them are clean books. Thanks for the hard work!

Ann, Yes, it’s great for you to list your books. We hope to get to them soon. We have a long list we are working through. Thanks so much for all the recommendations.
Thank you for sharing this list! My daughter (still in single digits) has a reading level of 10.7 – 11.9. It’s a challenge finding appropriate books in her reading level. Your list and insight is much appreciated!
I saw that The Rithmatist made the list. I would also recommend Brandon Sanderson’s other YA books: Steelheart & Firefight. His adult stuff is also clean, so I would let my kid read any of his books. But the YA books have young protag’s and are a fun superhero twist style story.
@MamaSita Brandon Sanderson is my oldest sons favorite author. He reads everything he writes (usually the day it comes out). I will see about adding the other books on to the list. I’m not sure why I haven’t added them already. Thanks so much for your input.
I love being able to read a book and knowing that it is clean. Thank you so much!
Great list! Really happy I came across this blog post. I am always looking for appropriate reads for my daughter. She recently just finished an awesome book called “Convergence” by author Trudie Hayes that needs to be added to this list (or a future clean list for sure). It is an addictive coming of age story that follows three preteens who form an unlikely friendship after a series of bizarre events following their first day of school. Otis, Chandler and Marissa have to worry about what they look like, relationships, school work and now, alternate realities and their destinies! It is a super fun read with a great message and really likable characters. I can’t recommend it enough as a wholesome and enjoyable book for teens and tweens
Thank you for sharing this with everyone. I refer to your page frequently for my 11yo daughter who is a voracious reader. May I recommend to you a relatively new series: Gabby Wells Thrillers? The first in the series is called Kneel and Prey *(by Pete Bauer) and it was excellent.
Hey!
I will just tell you that I am 16 years old ( most in the comments seem to be 11-13 or so) and usually you would say… Oh she is old enough to not particularly care if her books are SUPER clean but I do. Finding clean books in the YA section is HARD, you pick up a book and it could be perfectly clean and have a wonderful story or it could be about I a hooker and oops it didn’t mention that on the cover. That said don’t read ‘Veil of Azure Sequins’ by June Marie Saxton, although In general her books seem to be clean. I have read a few of them besides that one and they seem to be perfectly clean. Before I found this post I had read a few of the books in this list and can personally testify that they are clean and VERY good. I’m a total bookworm. I’m a-book-a-day kind of person. (Instead of grounding me my mom takes away my book if that’s any indication) I love this post and how I can use it to help me find good books in the YA section and beyond. Thanks so much. I will keep you posted about good clean books that I discover!
@Nanobug You are too cute! I so appreciate your comments! You sound a lot like one of my boys, we too had to take away books instead of grounding for him. My daughter is 15 1/2 and she too wants her books clean (thank goodness!) If you come across any great recommendations, let us know.
You should check out “A Tale of Frachselbourg”. It’s totally clean and is a humorous fantasy novel for teens/young adults.
https://www.amazon.com/Tale-Frachselbourg-Heidi-Heather-Braun/dp/1507882483/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1447616279&sr=8-1&keywords=a+tale+of+frachselbourg
I found a great action-adventure book that was perfect for my son, totally clean and really exciting. Then my girls picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Interesting title – “The Awesome Adventures of Pickle Boy”
https://www.amazon.com/Awesome-Adventures-Pickle-Boy-Book-ebook/dp/B00B3N03ZK/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1375239778&sr=1-6
Very clean and wholesome. I enjoyed it too!
Best,
Aliza F
As a dad of five girls, I appreciate this expanded list. I must admit, I don’t read what they are reading but am encouraged to find many of their books on here. They are always asking me for more books and I finally have a reference. Thank you.
Hi, thanks for the recommendations!
I am 17 and I have a few recommendations for your list. When I was about 13 I really enjoyed Aprilynne Pike’s “Wings” series. It’s about fairies and twists the tale of king Arthur. It’s a romance, but its clean. Right now I’m really enjoying Maggie Steifvater’s “Raven Cycle” series. I got the first book when I was 14 and I’m just waiting for the last one to come out.
Then there’s always books like:
“The Golden Compass”
“Harry Potter”
“Deltora Quest” (maybe more appropriate for young male readers who are just beginning, but it is an old favourite of mine)
I hope I helped 🙂
Most of these books are really amazing but some arn’t
This list is amazing! As a Young Adult author who tries very hard to write clean books, finding this post is so encouraging. Going to try to send you an email. 🙂
